Brief introduction of the tool

Plurk is a live journal that allows anyone to show case their lives for others to see. It is a free social networking site (similar to Facebook and Twitter). Users can post up to 140 text characters of short posts and links. Plurk can be used to post links to websites, videos, upload photos, or to share thoughts/opinions, and feelings.

  • Advantages of the tool

Some of the advantages are:
  • Allows people to post valuable links and information for others to look at
  • Has a chatroom feature to communicate with friends and coworkers
  • You can respond to posts by instant messanger and by text messaging
  • Short, quick way to communicate and post information

  • Disadvantages (limitations) of the tool

Some of the disadvantages are:
  • The messages can only contain 140 characters, so the posts are short and cannot be used in certain situations.
  • You cannot respond unless it is with an instant messanger or a text from a cell phone
  • Very few features: posts and chatroom
  • Not very organized in terms of posting and finding older posts

Application of the tool in your subject area

There are many different ways to incorporate Plurk into a school day, especially for elementary aged students. One example is writing daily journals. Instead of writing in a notebook each morning, students can post short messages on Plurk about how they feel that morning. Also, students can use this website to communicate with their classmates through chatrooms. This will allow students to have a feel on how technology works, and different ways to use it in the classroom. Teachers can set up chatrooms so their students can be involved in small class discussion about different subjects they may be learning. Also, teachers can use this site for students to ask questions, when it is independent work time. There are many different possibilities that Plurk can be used for in the classroom, these are just a few suggestions.
